Essay 13

"why I stand by the road for peace"
 - rick

I stand on the street corner, for a couple reasons.
#1 because I thereby witness, that there are indeed voices raised in the town square
that peace is possible, peace is workable, peace is "dreamable".

I stand on the street corner
#2 so that those others who dream of peace, realize that we are not alone.

I stand on the street corner
#3 because when i see the look of wonder, and solidarity
from a passerby who only moment ago was caught up
in the daily grind - lost in the flotsam of the regular stuff

I stand on the street corner
#4 because often they say to me, you are standing there for me

I stand on the street corner
#5 because when all they can do is HONK for peace
that is indeed something - and when lots of cars go by and they HONK
and humble us with their noise, we all smile by the side of the road,
cause we speak for them and they respond to us!

I stand on the street corner
#6 cause even though a few hateful souls will offer you their contempt
or scream their own bloodlust, or offer a vulgarity
you can see they are hurt and they need to share the pain
they've received from the world, and maybe for some that lessens
some of the silent hurt - I thank them for sharing their important point of view!

I stand on the street corner
#7 because even those who scream an awful ugly cry - they at least, think me so foolish
and themselves so wise, that they must leave feeling better for it

I stand on the street corner
# 8 because so many times, I've heard questions from people,
who honestly wanted to know WHY ? Why this time, why this war,
why this corner? and even better what? what can I do -
and if I can give them a scrap of data - an idea, a place, a group, this will help us all.

I stand on the street corner
#9 because if I make it alittle easier, for one more to stand for peace
then my time has been well spent

why I stand by the road for peace
#10 - because it reminds people that we need to work for peace every day
in the face of better odds, than ghandi and mandela and dr king faced

solidarity & peace
